Before the Canadian government committed to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada the YMCA already had newcomer services in place, and these are available to Syrian newcomers arriving now. Here are some specific areas of support:
A friendly, multilingual and knowledgeable staff will provide free one-on-one information and referral services, and you’ll find computers, fax machines, a library, etc. They offer monthly newcomer information sessions.
This will allow newcomers to join the right LINC (Language Instruction to Newcomers to Canada) class for their needs.
The Newcomer Youth Leadership Development (NYLD) program is designed to help newcomer youth and parents have a positive settlement experience. NYLD offers a safe, supportive, and fun environment where you can meet new people, build new skills and get involved in your new community.
From identifying opportunities to helping newcomers write effective resumes and prepare for interviews, the YMCA will help find with all aspects of finding employment.
